WESGRO, the tourism, trade and investment promotion agency for Cape Town and the Western Cape, has together with other sector bodies, collectively facilitated more than R14.2bn in investments and created more than 28,200 jobs, Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille said.
This was a significant return as the city had invested more than R97.5m in Wesgro and other special-purpose vehicles since 2011, she said.
De Lille was speaking during a visit on Thursday to the Cape Innovation and Technology Initiative to showcase the strides the organisation has made in positioning Cape Town as the digital capital of Africa. As part of its trade and investment mandate, the city provides funding and support to sector bodies to undertake investment and trade promotion; and skills and industry development as a catalyst in growing and developing priority sectors.
